Venus Williams sets up an all-American semifinals meeting at the 2017 US Open. She defeats Petra Kvitova in the quarterfinals.

Venus Williams defeats Petra Kvitova in three sets during her quarterfinals meeting with the two-time Wimbledon champion. She wins 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (2).

The quarterfinals victory sets up an all-American semifinals match featuring Sloane Stephens. The younger Stephens is fresh off of a hard fought win over Anastasija Sevastova.

Williams, who is 37-years-old, is a two-time US Open champion. She took the title back-to-back years in 2000 and 2001. Her track record at the major tournament also includes titles in both doubles and mixed doubles.

As the current world No. 9 in women’s singles tennis, Venus Williams is seeing a resurgence on the 2017 WTA Tour.

After the quarterfinals win, Williams gave thanks to sister Serena Williams for her impact on the sport. Serena is away from the court as she has been preparing for the birth of her child. She won the Australian Open to start the 2017 tour.

As for Kvitova, she had an incredible 2017 US Open run. With limited playing time over the last year, she must be commended for her effort over the past two weeks.

Kvitova made her return to tennis this summer at the French Open. The former Wimbledon champion had been away from the sport after suffering an injury in late 2016. In December of last year, an intruder broke into her Czech Republic home and attacked her with a knife. Kvitova was able to fend off the attacker but suffered serious injuries to her left hand. Her strong play so far in 2017 has shown that she is back and ready to compete. Kvitova’s run at the US Open included a win over world No. 3 and Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza.

Venus Williams should be the favorite in her semifinals match. Fellow American Madison Keys will face Kaia Kanepi in her quarterfinals match. Another American, CoCo Vandeweghe, also squares off against top seed Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. American women’s tennis is making a statement at the 2017 US Open. Stay tuned to see how Williams and others fare throughout the rest of the major tournament.
