Federer had not dropped a single set in either of his previous two matches before facing del Potro. The Argentinian tennis star, however, has showed incredible determination at the US Open this year.
Coming back to defeat sixth seed Dominic Thiem, del Potro appeared down and out before winning three straight sets to take his match against the young star. The Argentinian has had excited crowds backing him all throughout the tournament at Flushing Meadows.
Up next for Juan Martin del Potro is Rafael Nadal on Friday.
While Roger Federer took both the Australian Open and Wimbledon title this year, Nadal claimed victory yet again at the French Open. The Spanish superstar is the top seed this year at the US Open. Del Potro has the momentum right now, but he will need all of it if he hopes to advance past Nadal on Friday.
Nadal has dropped just two sets throughout his five matches at the US Open thus far.
The 31-year-old Nadal is a two-time champion at the major tournament, having won most recently in 2013. With two former champions coming together in the semifinals, fans are in for quite a match at Flushing Meadows.
As for Roger Federer, he has completed yet another impressive major tournament run. At 36-years-old, the 19-time Grand Slam singles winner still forces any player to be at his best when playing against him. He continues to impress whenever he is on the court. Stay tuned to see how the action unfolds at the 2017 US Open.
