Earlier in 2017, Nadal earned his tenth career title at the French Open. After a tough runner-up finish to Federer at the Australian Open, the Spanish tennis star was set to bounce back during the clay court season.
Along with his major tournament wins on the year, Rafael Nadal also won in Barcelona, Madrid, and Monte Carlo.
With top players such as Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, and Kei Nishikori all out currently due to injury, both Nadal and Federer have risen to the occasion.
Rafael Nadal defeats Kevin Anderson in three sets to win the 2017 US Open title. He takes the match in classic Nadal fashion, winning 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. In the semifinals, Nadal also defeated the red hot Juan Martin del Potro in four sets.
Anderson is the current world No. 32, making him the lowest ranked men’s singles player in the finals since the ranking system was created. It was his first ever Grand Slam singles final. Despite the loss to Nadal, the South African tennis star was overwhelmed by his runner-up finish. His career experience gave him an edge throughout his time at Flushing Meadows. Anderson defeated the likes of American Sam Querrey and Pablo Carreno Busta among others.
