Garbine Muguruza: world No. 1 rolls into Tokyo quarterfinals

Garbine Muguruza is now the world No. 1 in women’s singles tennis. She reaches the quarterfinals at the Toray Pan Pacific Open.
Garbine Muguruza headlines a star studded field at the 2017 Pan Pacific Open. She defeats Monica Puig in her round of 16 match in order to advance.
Cruising into quarterfinals action in Tokyo, Muguruza wins her meeting with Puig in straight sets. The 2017 Wimbledon singles champion takes the match 6-4, 6-0.

Also into the quarterfinals are Karolína Plíšková and Angelique Kerber. The two former world No. 1’s face one another in their quarterfinals match on Wednesday evening US EDT time. Kerber is fresh off of a hard fought win over Daria Kasatkina.
Plíšková also won her meeting with top qualifier Magda Linette 6-2, 6-1.
Garbine Muguruza must be considered the favorite this week at the Toray Pan Pacific Open.
At Wimbledon this year, Muguruza won the singles title, defeating Venus Williams. She took the finals meeting with the veteran American tennis star 7-5, 6-0. The win at Wimbledon was her second career singles Grand Slam title. Now the world No. 1 in women’s singles tennis, Muguruza looks to solidify her spot on top.
Garbine Muguruza will face the winner of Kurumi Nara and Caroline Garcia. Also still in action is former Pan Pacific Open champion Caroline Wozniacki. She takes on American Shelby Rogers in her round of 16 match. Wozniacki has risen in the ranks, reaching the world No. 6 position in women’s singles tennis. She is also No. 6 in the Race to Singapore.
