Following a dramatic victory by Roger Federer over Nick Kyrgios, Team Europe has secured an incredible championship victory at the inaugural 2017 Laver Cup.

It was only fitting for the inaugural Laver Cup to end in the manner it did. With Team Europe closing in on the first title in the tournament’s promising existence, it was Roger Federer who was tasked with securing the final victory.

As Federer has proven consistently capable of doing, he took the challenge to heart and won one of the most dramatic matches of the 2017 season.

Team Europe entered the final match of the Laver Cup with a 12-9 lead over Team World. Dream matches and pairings occurred throughout the event, including the incomparable duo of Federer and Rafael Nadal teaming up for an awe-inspiring doubles match.

With a dramatic 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), [11-9] victory over Kyrgios, the 19-time Grand Slam tournament champion gave Team Europe the Laver Cup crown.

In an instant classic of a match between future and present day stars of the sport, it was the 36-year-old who persevered.

Federer appeared in three matches at the 2017 Laver Cup, going 2-0 in singles competition and 1-0 in doubles. He won a total of seven points for his team, which was more than half of the points Europe required to win the event.

For those who didn’t expect to see such high-stakes action at the Laver Cup, the emotion looked a little something like this:

That’s a camera shot for the ages.

Team Europe was comprised of some of the biggest names in the world: Tomas Berdych, Marin Cilic, Federer, Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, and Alexander Zverev. Led by coach and tennis icon Bjorn Borg, Europe gutted out the win at the inaugural event.

Team World fought admirably in defeat, with the team of John Isner, Kyrgios, Sam Querrey, Denis Shapovalov, Jack Sock, and Frances Tiafoe doing coach and tennis legend John McEnroe proud.
