Edmund takes the meeting with Tomic 6-4, 6-2. Up next for the young British tennis star is American Jared Donaldson. The 20-year-old American is the current world No. 58 in men’s singles tennis.
As the current world No. 46, Kyle Edmund has seen both ups and downs on the 2017 ATP World Tour.
Action at the 2017 Chengdu Open provides the 22-year-old British tennis player a chance at redemption. He is just 24-25 in his ATP singles matches coming into the tournament. Edmund remains, however, within reach of his career high ranking of world No. 40 which he achieved last year. His strong opening round performance required just 62 minutes of play before Edmund secured the victory.
Highlights of Edmund’s 2017 campaign include a semifinals appearance at the Atlanta Open and a difficult third round loss at the French Open. He remains in search of his first career ATP singles title. The Chengdu Open is a chance at just that.
This week’s favorite is top seed Dominic Thiem. He squares off against Guido Pella of Argentina on Wednesday. Thiem is the current world No. 7 on the ATP World Tour and has one title so far this year. He won earlier in the year at Rio de Janeiro. The rising star has catapulted onto the tennis scene with an impressive eight ATP singles titles in the previous three years. Look for him to go for a ninth this week at the Chengdu Open.
Stay tuned to see if Kyle Edmund can continue on at the 2017 Chengdu Open.
