Also seeing an early upset is former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki.
Having just won a title last week, Wozniacki was riding high coming into the Wuhan Open. She drops her opening round meeting with Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari.
Wozniacki was the No. 4 seed this week at the Wuhan Open. Sakkari takes the match in straight sets, winning 7-5, 6-3. Up next for Sakkari is the sixteenth seed Elena Vesnina. The two square off on Wednesday at the Wuhan Open.
With two of the top contenders out of action, top seed Garbine Muguruza remains the clear cut favorite. Earlier this year, Muguruza reached glory at Wimbledon. It was her second career Grand Slam singles title. In 2016, she also won the French Open. Winning her match against Lesia Tsurenko in straight sets, she advances at the Wuhan Open.
