Dominic Thiem ousted from Shanghai, ATP Finals chase continues

Dominic Thiem is out of the Shanghai Masters after his opening round match. His ATP Finals destiny remains in limbo for the time being.
Dominic Thiem sees a tough three-set loss in his Shanghai opener.
The world No. 7 remains in search of his spot for the end of year finals in London. He is currently in the fourth position in the Race to London. Thiem drops his opener to Viktor Troicki of Serbia. Troicki faces American tennis veteran John Isner next at the tournament.

Action at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in China is off to a fantastic start. Already, the tournament has seen both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer win their opening round matches. Third seed Alexander Zverev also advances after seeing his opponent retire.
Viktor Troicki defeats Dominic Thiem in three sets, winning 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
Nadal, Feder, and Zverev are the first three qualifiers for the ATP Finals in London. While his chances are still largely positive to qualify, Thiem fails to clinch his spot for the end of year finals yet again.
With several top players in men’s singles tennis out for the year due to injury, the Race to London is coming down to a thrilling conclusion. As Thiem and others vie for the final spots, action is only heating up. Another ATP Finals hopeful is Grigor Dimitrov. He wins his opener in Shanghai over American Ryan Harrison. Dimitrov moves on and will face Sam Querrey in the next round.

Action rolls on at the Shanghai Masters in China. With the top four seeds and several other top players advancing, the next round of play will see strong tennis. Federer, who is the 2014 singles champion at the ATP World Tour event, faces qualifier Alexandr Dolgopolov in the next round. Dolgopolov has had an impressive 2017 ATP World Tour so far, adding a third career singles title to his name.
Dominic Thiem remains a top contender to qualify for the ATP Finals in London. It is disappointing to see an early exit for the young Austrian tennis star in Shanghai, but he should be able to rebound in the coming days.
