Garbine Muguruza named WTA singles player of the year

Garbine Muguruza is now officially the WTA Tour singles player of the year. The Spanish-Venezuelan tennis star reached career heights in 2017.

Garbine Muguruza has been named the singles player of the year.

Although the year is not quite over, Muguruza can rest assured that she is in the prime of her career. The 2017 WTA Tour featured new heights for the Spanish tennis star. She achieved the world No. 1 ranking in women’s singles along with several other accomplishments.

Winning the 2017 Wimbledon Championships, Muguruza notched her second career Grand Slam singles title. In 2016, she won the French Open defeating American tennis star Serena Williams.

Her 2017 Wimbledon title featured a win over American veteran Venus Williams.

Despite relinquishing the top ranking in women’s singles recently to Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza is poised to make a splash at the 2017 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore. She comes in as the second seed behind Halep and headlines the White Group.

Her first match at the WTA Finals is against Jelena Ostapenko. The young Latvian tennis star is fresh off of her first career Grand Slam win. Now just 20-years-old, Ostapenko is one of the rising stars in women’s singles tennis. Muguruza will need to be at her best taking on the young up and comer. The two square off on Sunday in Singapore.
