Roger Federer opens Swiss Indoors in fine fashion

Roger Federer is off to a strong start at the 2017 Swiss Indoors. The seven-time tournament champion is the top seed this week.

Roger Federer is back on a court that he knows all too well.

The seven-time Swiss Indoors champion opens his run at the 2017 ATP World Tour event in typical Federer-fashion. He defeats American Frances Tiafoe in straight sets.

The Swiss tennis superstar takes the meeting with Tiafoe in two sets, winning 6-1, 6-3. Ending the match in just over an hour, Federer displayed exactly why he is the top seed this week at the Swiss Indoors.

Roger Federer is now 3-0 against the young up and coming Tiafoe.

Their previous meeting at the 2017 US Open went to five sets. This time around, however, Federer rose to the occasion and appeared flawless in his win over the young American. He advances through to the next round with ease at the 2017 Swiss Indoors.

Second seed Marin Cilic and third seed David Goffin also advanced through to the next round of play in Basel. Play at the Swiss Indoors is critical for Roger Federer in the race back to the world No. 1 ranking. Currently, Rafael Nadal is the top ranked player in men’s singles tennis. Both players have already qualified for the end of year ATP Finals in London.

A strong run at the 2017 Swiss Indoors will setup Roger Federer nicely for this year’s ATP Finals. He and Nadal are the top two players so far at the end of year tournament. While others compete to round out the final qualifying spots, Federer is simply looking to find his rhythm heading into London. As a seven-time champion in Basel, there is no doubt that he will take advantage of his time on the court this week.

Federer last won the Swiss Indoors in 2015. Defending champion Marin Cilic is also in action this week. He is the second seeded player and is currently in the sixth position in the Race to London. Look for Federer and Cilic to both seek deep runs this week in Basel. Third seeded Goffin is also in the eighth position in the Race to London and will be looking to make moves this week.
