Elina Svitolina plays spoiler, upsetting the world No. 1 in straight sets. The Ukrainian tennis star defeats Halep, winning 6-3 6-4. While Svitolina is also eliminated, she ends her week on a high note.

Now, Simona Halep must worry about Karolina Pliskova overtaking her for the world No. 1 ranking.

If Pliskova can win the title in Singapore, she will be back in the top position in women’s singles tennis. Also failing to advance into the semifinals round was former world No. 1 Garbine Muguruza. She drops her final match to American tennis star Venus Williams.

The American is a former champion at the WTA finals, having won the title in 2008. She defeated Vera Zvonareva in 2008 and now has a shot at a second career title at the end of year tournament. Williams squares off against French tennis star Caroline Garcia. In the other semifinals match, Danish tennis star Carolina Wozniacki takes on Karolina Pliskova.
