Vienna Open: Lucas Pouille dominates Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Vienna Open action saw two French tennis players battle for the title. Lucas Pouille cruises to victory, defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Vienna Open action featured two top French tennis players in the finals.

The unseeded Lucas Pouille cruises to victory past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He takes the finals meeting in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday. The loss keeps Tsonga just out of reach of the eighth position in the Race to London.

Currently, Pablo Carreno Busta sits in the eighth position to qualify for the 2017 ATP Finals in London. He is just 295 points ahead of Tsonga. Also in the hunt is Juan Martin del Potro. He falls to Roger Federer in the Swiss Indoors finals this week.

Lucas Pouille wins his third ATP singles title on the year.

As the current world No. 25 in men’s singles tennis, Pouille has been solid throughout the year. Coming into play at the 2017 Vienna Open, he posted a 29-20 singles match record to go along with his previous two titles. The 23-year-old now has four career ATP singles titles to his name.

Tsonga and others will continue to vie for a spot at the year end finals. With just the Paris Masters left to go, action is coming down to the wire. On the women’s side, Danish tennis superstar Caroline Wozniacki claims victory this week at the 2017 WTA Finals. Notching her first career title at the end of year tournament, she defeats American veteran Venus Williams in the finals.

Currently, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are the players to beat down the stretch. Federer earned his eighth career title at the Swiss Indoors this week. The ATP World Tour event is played in his hometown of Basel. Federer also moved into second in terms of career title wins in the Open Era. He has 95 career singles titles to his name.

The 2017 Vienna Open title is Pouille’s first ATP World Tour 500 win. At just 23-years-old, there is no doubt that the young up and comer will be competitive in the coming years. The win is also the first over his fellow countryman Tsonga. Pouille acknowledged his emotions after the match and was in high spirits after his title victory.
