Gael Monfils ends 2017 season, looking ahead to next year

Gael Monfils has withdrawn from the 2017 Paris Masters. The French tennis star is ending his season prior to Paris and Davis Cup action.

The French tennis star was set to face Italian tennis veteran Paolo Lorenzi before pulling out of the ATP World Tour event. Monfils will also miss the Davis Cup final.

The 2017 ATP World Tour saw Monfils dealing with lingering knee injuries. At 31-years-old, the year was undoubtedly somewhat of a setback for the French tennis veteran.

Gael Monfils posted a 20-14 singles match record on the year.

Injuries forced the French veteran to withdraw from several tournaments throughout the year. In 2016, he won a title in Washington, earning his sixth career ATP singles title. While 2017 was more grueling on Monfils, he is hopeful that 2018 will begin on a positive note.

The current world No. 46 posted an announcement via his Twitter account on Monday. He is turning his focus toward recovery in the coming weeks while he eyes a strong start on the 2018 ATP World Tour. Monfils is a capable veteran tennis player with tons of big tournament experience. Also a fan favorite on tour, there is no doubt that all are wishing him the best in the offseason.

Gael Monfils will be rooting on his French teammates in their David Cup final.

As for action at the Paris Masters, several players remain in contention for the final spots in London. The 2017 ATP Finals in London will see Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer headline a star studded field of players in men’s singles tennis. Both Monfils’ fellow countrymen Lucas Pouille and Jo-Wilfriend Tsonga are in need of huge weeks in Paris if they hope to qualify for London. Pouille is fresh off of a title win at the 2017 Vienna Open. He defeated Tsonga in the finals.
