Paris Masters: several French tennis players advance at ATP event

Paris Masters action is underway with several French veteran and young players in action. Many have moved forward, winning their opening matches.

Paris Masters action kicks off with several hometown favorites.

French tennis veteran Richard Gasquet is among the early winners at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament. He defeats fellow countryman Benoît Paire in a three-set thriller.

Gasquet wins his meeting with Paire, taking the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Up next for Gasquet is sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov. The sixth seed is already a qualifier for the ATP Finals in London.

After winning two qualifying matches, Jeremy Chardy defeats Gilles Simon in his Paris opener.

Chardy defied the odds, winning two strong matches in the qualifying rounds at the Paris Masters. He takes down fellow countryman Simon in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-0. Up next for Chardy is Roberto Bautista Agut.

The Spanish tennis star is the fourteenth seed this week at the 2017 Paris Masters. He has two ATP singles titles to his name this year. Also in action is Rafael Nadal. The top seed this week, he needs just one match win to secure the year-end world No. 1 ranking. Look for Nadal to come out strong in his opening round match at the Paris Masters.

Former champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga takes on Julien Benneteau. His fellow countryman won his opener over Denis Shapovalov of Canada in straight sets. Tsonga is the 2008 winner at the Paris Masters. He will potentially need to win the title this week if he hopes to qualify for the 2017 ATP Finals in London next month.

Play continues on Tuesday at the final tournament before the ATP Finals. With several hometown favorites in the mix, look for a thrilling continuation of play at the 2017 Paris Masters.
