Steve Johnson adds an ATP singles title to his name in 2017. He is another success story for American men’s singles tennis.

Steve Johnson earns his second career ATP singles title on the 2017 ATP World Tour.

The 27-year-old American may not be the headlining player in American men’s singles tennis, but he is without a doubt another success story. In 2017, Johnson won the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston.

Johnson ends the year as the world No. 44 in men’s singles tennis. Last year, he even reached as high as the No. 21 ranking on the ATP World Tour. 2017 makes back-to-back seasons with title wins for the American tennis player.

Steve Johnson posted a 30-22 ATP singles match record in 2017.

Many know John Isner and Jack Sock as the major names in American men’s singles tennis. Johnson, however, is a contender in his own right. Not only did he see doubles success at the 2016 Olympics along with Sock, but he has put together an impressive singles resume in the last two years.

American tennis may be seeing a resurgence as we speak. Sock rocketed himself in the rankings after winning his first ever Masters 1000 title. He qualified for the end of year ATP Finals in London with his win. Isner completed a strong year that saw him ending in the world No. 17 position. Elsewhere, Sam Querrey even earned two titles on the year and reached the quarterfinals at the US Open.

Steve Johnson has been the top ranked American men’s tennis player before. In 2016, he briefly earned the honor after strong play mid-season. He may not yet have the resume of either Isner or Sock, but Johnson is capable of contending in any tournament. Men’s singles tennis is seeing a new generation of young players surge of tour. Johnson falls right in between those new up and comers and other veterans. His solid mix of experience and youth makes him an interesting player to watch on the ATP World Tour.
