Dominic Thiem leads his career head-to-head matchup against German tennis star Alexander Zverev. Here’s a look at their growing rivalry.

Dominic Thiem continues to lead his head-to-head matchup against Alexander Zverev.

Although the younger German tennis star is one ranking ahead of Thiem in men’s singles, Thiem has a 4-1 singles match record against the world No. 4. Both players represent some of the best within a new generation of men’s singles players.

The two rising stars faced one another just once on the 2017 ATP World Tour. That meeting came in Rotterdam. Thiem took their round of 32 match in three sets, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Closing out strong, the Austrian tennis star maintained his dominance over Zverev.

On the 2016 ATP World Tour, Dominic Thiem went 3-1 against Alexander Zverev.

Although the younger German has already seen some success against the likes of Novak Djokovic and Swiss great Roger Federer, he does not yet have a feel for Thiem. The Austrian is just 24-years-old while Zverev is even younger at 20-years-old. Both players currently round out the top five in men’s singles tennis. Leading the way in the rankings right now are world No. 1 Rafael Nadal and Federer at No. 2. Federer and Nadal largely dominated the 2017 ATP World Tour, swapping Grand Slam titles throughout the year. Players such as Thiem and Zverev, however, will likely contend for major tournament titles in the coming years.

Zverev notched two Masters 1000 titles in 2017. Thiem, on the other hand, reached his first ever Masters 1000 final and also saw deep tournament success in other Masters 1000 events. Both players are already making their mark on the sport of tennis. Dominic Thiem may have scoreboard for now over Zverev, but this is just the beginning of their rivalry. With several veterans still amongst the top players in men’s singles, the younger generation will need to continue to prove itself in 2018. Thiem and Zverev are fantastic examples of players who can challenge the old guard right now. Stay tuned to see how all of the action unfolds in the early months of the 2018 ATP World Tour.
