Roger Federer named Swiss Sportsman of the Year

Roger Federer is named 2017’s Swiss Sportsman of the Year. The Swiss great finishes the year as the world No. 2 in men’s singles tennis.

Roger Federer finishes yet another fantastic year on the ATP World Tour.

Earning two Grand Slam singles titles amongst seven total tour wins, the Swiss great is named 2017’s Swiss Sportsman of the Year. It is the seventh time throughout his career that Federer has earned the honor.

Federer joked that his children questioned why he was winning the award when Rafael Nadal finished as the world No. 1. Both the Spanish superstar and Federer had phenomenal years on the 2017 ATP World Tour. Despite finishing runner-up in the rankings to Nadal, Federer did go undefeated against the world No. 1.

The 2018 ATP World Tour kicks off with both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer as the players to beat.

Looking at the first Grand Slam event of the 2018 ATP World Tour, Federer will be the favorite at Melbourne Park. In 2017, he defeated Nadal in the finals at the Australian Open. Federer took their meeting in a five-set epic, winning 6–4, 3–6, 6–1, 3–6, 6–3. The two tennis greats would go on to swap major tournament wins throughout the year. Federer closed his 2017 ATP World Tour with a 52-5 singles match record to go along with his seven ATP singles titles.

Roger Federer does not appear to be letting up. Even at 36-years-old, the Swiss tennis superstar continues to amaze fans and players alike. While he and Nadal largely dominated the majority of the 2017 tour, several young players such as Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov have started to also make themselves known. With 2018 right around the corner, other veteran stars like Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic are also returning from injury. Both former world No. 1’s, either Murray or Djokovic can shakeup the action in men’s singles this coming year.

Look for Federer to remain on top of his game throughout the early months of 2018. He will aim to retake the world No. 1 ranking and fend off other young up and comers and veterans alike. Stay tuned for updates on all of the action as the 2018 ATP World Tour kicks off next month.
