Simona Halep wins the 2017 WTA Tour fan favorite poll. She is the current world No. 1 in women’s singles tennis and is set to surge in the coming the year.

Simona Halep ends the 2017 WTA Tour with yet another award.

The year-end world No. 1 in women’s singles tennis is riding high right now. She earns the honor of the WTA Tour fan favorite this year, ending Agnieszka Radwanska six year run. Now, the Romanian tennis star is looking ahead to the 2018 tour.

Halep’s sole title on the 2017 WTA Tour came in Madrid. She did see, however, several deep tournament runs throughout the year. Consistency led her to the top ranking in women’s singles tennis at year’s end.

Simona Halep will seek her first ever Grand Slam title in 2018.

No stranger to the Grand Slam stage, the Romanian is a junior champion. She has also reached the finals twice at the French Open in both 2014 and 2017. Her chances this year were snapped by young up and comer Jelena Ostapenko who took home her first ever Grand Slam win.

The world No. 1 has strong support in her Romanian fanbase. With her rising profile in women’s singles tennis, she has also gained a following worldwide. At just 26-years-old, Halep will continue to make headlines and earn honors on the WTA Tour. Her winning the fan favorite poll this year is appropriate given her fantastic play all tour long.

The first Grand Slam of the calendar year is the Australian Open. Simona Halep has appeared in the quarterfinals twice at the tournament. Her new ranking makes her a top contender at the upcoming major tournament. Maria Sharapova, who returned to the WTA Tour in 2017 after serving a suspension, finished third in the fan favorite poll. The Russian is a former world No. 1 and champion at the Australian Open. Her being back on the tour spices things up for the 2018 Grand Slam circuit.
