Andy Murray delays trip to Australia, plans to play Brisbane

Andy Murray is still planning on participating at the Brisbane International. The former world No. 1, however, will delay his departure to Australia.

Andy Murray is returning from injury as he begins the 2018 ATP World Tour.

The former world No. 1 has delayed his departure for Australia this week. Despite the delay, Murray still plans to play at the Brisbane International. He is a former two-time champion at the tournament.

All eyes are on Murray right now. After reaching career heights at the end of the 2016 ATP World Tour, the Scot saw an up and down injury plagued year in 2017.

Andy Murray hopes to compete at both Brisbane and Melbourne Park next month.

Play at Brisbane kicks off on New Year’s day in Australia. Murray won back to back titles at the tournament in 2012 and 2013. Grigor Dimitrov is the defending champion at the ATP event.

While Murray is a three-time Grand Slam champion in men’s singles tennis, he is yet to win at the Australian Open. The Scot is, however, a five-time runner-up at the first Grand Slam event of the calendar year. He most recently reached the finals during the 2016 tournament where he fell to Novak Djokovic. The Serbian is also returning from injury and is hoping to play at the major tournament.

Andy Murray was set to arrive in Australia before the 25th of December. While the delayed departure may raise rumors as to whether or not he is ready to compete, there is no reason to worry just yet. The former world No. 1 has expressed his desire to compete in the upcoming tournaments next month. Roger Federer is the defending champion at Melbourne Park. Last year, he defeated now world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the finals at the major tournament. Murray, if healthy, could play spoiler as he attempts to rise again in the rankings.
