Serena Williams: return will shakeup 2018 WTA Tour

Serena Williams is returning to the courts this coming week. The American tennis superstar is poised to make a run on the 2018 WTA Tour.

Having taken time away from tennis in order to give birth to her first daughter, it now appears that Serena Williams is ready to hit the courts once again.

The American tennis superstar will be featured, along with Jelena Ostapenko, next week in Abu Dhabi. The two Grand Slam champions will play a one off match as the first women to compete in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship.

Already on the entry list for the Australian Open, Williams could make a run at Melbourne Park if she is ready to compete. Last year, she defeated sister Venus in the finals at the major tournament. It was her 23rd career Grand Slam singles title.

Serena Williams will challenge the new rising stars in women’s singles on the 2018 WTA Tour.

As it stands right now, Simona Halep enters the upcoming tour as the world No. 1 in women’s singles tennis.

Right behind her are Garbine Muguruza and WTA Finals champion Caroline Wozniacki. The top three have several other rising and veteran stars just behind them. All are vying for the top spot in the rankings. Williams will be no different. Her career has already made her the greatest to ever play the sport. The American superstar will look to add to her incredible resume in the coming months. Action at the Australian Open is under one month away.

Last year saw the return of Russian superstar Maria Sharapova. The former world No. 1 spent time away from the sport while serving a suspension for the use of a banned substance. Now, she has seen some success in her return and will also be gearing up for her first full season on tour. Serena Williams and others such as Sharapova enter an already skilled field of young players on the WTA Tour. Williams brings unparalleled experience and success to women’s singles and she will be a favorite in any tournament that she plays in. Look for players such as Halep, however, to fight her best for a debut Grand Slam title. Play at Melbourne Park is heating up.
