Alexander Zverev to use Hopman Cup as 2018 kickoff

Alexander Zverev is kicking off his 2018 season at the ITF’s Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia. He joins Angelique Kerber to makeup team Germany.

Alexander Zverev is coming off of a fantastic 2017 ATP World Tour.

The young German tennis star reached career heights last year and is poised to carry his newfound momentum right into the new year. The Hopman Cup is the perfect warmup event for the German as he eyes the upcoming 2018 Australian Open.

At just 20-years-old, Zverev has reached as high as the world No. 3 ranking in men’s singles tennis. He enters the 2018 ATP World Tour in the No. 4 position just behind Grigor Dimitrov.

Alexander Zverev reached the third round of action at the 2017 Australian Open.

Winning five ATP singles titles in 2017, Zverev could be an interesting pick to win a major tournament this year. If he can find his rhythm in the next two weeks, the young German tennis star will have a shot at the 2018 Australian Open title.

Play at the Hopman Cup features some of the best in men’s and women’s tennis. World No. 2 Roger Federer rounds out team Switzerland along with Belinda Bencic. Zverev saw some success against the Swiss great on the 2017 ATP World Tour. His strong play against top players in men’s singles tennis gives him some much needed experience heading into the opening tournaments of the upcoming ATP World Tour.

Alexander Zverev and team Germany kick off their Hopman Cup action against team Belgium on Monday. Kerber will also be looking to take advantage of the ITF event as she attempts to rise yet again the rankings. Her 2016 WTA Tour was fantastic, seeing her rise to the world No. 1 ranking in women’s singles tennis. Now, she must rebound from an up and down tour last year.
