Garbine Muguruza enters the 2018 Brisbane International as the top seed in the women’s singles draw. Here’s a look at how she fares this week.

Garbine Muguruza is the top seed at this year’s Brisbane International.

With action kicking off this week, here’s a look at how she fares. Muguruza enters the 2018 WTA Tour as the world No. 2 in women’s singles tennis. She is less than 100 points behind world No. 1 Simona Halep in the rankings at the start of the tour.

Muguruza is looking to not only leapfrog into the top position in early 2018, but to also make a run come play at Melbourne Park. The Spanish-Venezuelan tennis star is a two-time Grand Slam singles champion.

Garbine Muguruza reached the quarterfinals at the 2017 Australian Open.

The world No. 2 looks to add to her Grand Slam resume next month. Play in Brisbane is the perfect primer in order to gain some momentum.

She will need to, however, contend with the defending champion at the Brisbane International. Karolina Pliskova is the second seed at the tournament. She and Elina Svitolina could both make deep runs this coming week. Pliskova took home the title last year, defeating Alize Cornet in straight sets. The Czech tennis star won her finals meeting last year 6–0, 6–3. She ought to be considered a top contender this week in Brisbane.

She would go on to close the year out in the second position, but her consistent play throughout the previous two years has made her a household name in the sport. She is without a doubt one of the best in women’s singles tennis right now.
