Roger Federer rings in 2018 at Hopman Cup in Perth

Roger Federer is ringing in the new year with a strong start to his Hopman Cup run in Perth, Australia. He and Belinda Bencic win their openers.
Roger Federer and teammate Belinda Bencic have opened strong in Perth, Australia.
The two Swiss stars have defeated team Japan 3-0 over the weekend. Federer, who opened with a singles victory, went on to join Bencic for a mixed doubles win over the Japanese. Now, they await their meeting with team Russia on Tuesday.

Federer is off to the start he was looking for in 2018. Closing out the year with a New Year’s Eve weekend win, the Swiss great appears in fine form and is all smiles so far in Perth.

Hopman Cup action in Perth will set up Federer nicely for play at this year’s Australian Open. Already enjoying his time in Australia, there is no doubt that the Swiss great and current world No. 2 feels right at home at Melbourne Park.
If Federer can successfully defend his title at the Australian Open, he will take home his sixth career win at the Grand Slam event. Last year, he defeated friend and rival Rafael Nadal in five sets during their finals meeting. Already off to a great start at the Hopman Cup, the 36-year-old Swiss superstar does not appear to be letting up as he prepares for the 2018 ATP World Tour.

Roger Federer took time to also ring in the new year in Perth. He posted a celebratory photo on his Twitter account today as he enjoyed some fireworks. The 2018 ATP World Tour will likely see yet another solid year from the world No. 2. Chasing down Nadal for the top ranking, he could very well be back in the world No. 1 position within several weeks. Many top players in men’s singles tennis are attempting returns from injury. Federer, however, has strategically set himself up for a manageable approach to his time on tour in the last year.
