Eugenie Bouchard and teammate Vasek Pospisil took an opening match loss at this year’s Hopman Cup. The home team favorite of Australia defeated Canada 2-1 this past weekend. Now, Bouchard and Pospisil look to bounce back against Germany on Wednesday.
This year, team Germany features former world No. 1 Angelique Kerber and rising men’s singles tennis superstar Alexander Zverev. They edged team Belgium 2-1 in their opener.

The team to beat so far is Switzerland. With Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic playing lights out tennis so far this week, the Swiss have yet to drop a single match. They have swept both Japan and Russia.
Eugenie Bouchard can gain momentum at this year’s Hopman Cup.
The young Canadian tennis star has already made a coaching change prior to the 2018 WTA Tour. She has also expressed having changes in her workout regimen. Now, she needs to translate her newfound approaches to the courts. She has seen success against Kerber in the past.
Bouchard has a 4-2 WTA singles match record against the former world No. 1. Even though the Hopman Cup is an ITF team event, the Canadian’s history of success against Kerber should provide her a boost of confidence going into their match. Another positive is that team Canada rallied for their mixed doubles match, securing a win in their 1-2 loss to Australia. Look for Bouchard and Pospisil to attempt to carry that momentum into play on Wednesday.

Eugenie Bouchard is kicking off a critical year for her career. The young Canadian reached career heights in 2014 before falling into a slump these past two years on the WTA Tour. While she has tasted flashes of success throughout the past tours, Bouchard needs to once again prove that she can be a top player in women’s singles tennis. With the Australian Open in less than two weeks, there is no doubt that she would like to find her rhythm by closing out the Hopman Cup in fine fashion.
