Gael Monfils eases through the first set in his quarterfinals match in Doha. He then survives a hard fought second set to meet Dominic Thiem in the semis.

Gael Monfils meets top seeded Dominic Thiem for a semifinals match at the Qatar Open in Doha. Thiem is the last remaining seeded player in the tournament.

The French tennis veteran, however, will make the road to the finals difficult for the top seed. Monfils survives his quarterfinals meeting with Peter Gojowczyk of Germany. Monfils earns a hard fought  6-3, 7-6 victory over the German tennis player.

Looking at their career head-to-head, Thiem is undefeated against Monfils. The French tennis veteran has not fared well against the younger Austrian. Monfils will, however, look to continue on in Doha this week.

Gael Monfils is a former world No. 6 on the ATP World Tour.

The two tennis stars meet for their semifinals match tomorrow at the Qatar Open. Thiem is the current world No. 5 in men’s singles tennis. His strong 2017 ATP World Tour has set him up to make an impact early in 2018. Monfils is the current world No. 46 but cannot be counted out.

The 31-year-old Monfils is a fan favorite who displays fantastic athletic abilities on the court. While Thiem is 3-0 against him in their singles matches, two of those three matches have gone to three sets. Anything can happen at the semifinals in Doha. If either player can earn the title at the Qatar Open, they ought to be considered a top contender at the upcoming Australian Open. Both Thiem and Monfils remain in search of their first career Grand Slam singles titles.
