Team Switzerland defeats Germany to win 2018 Hopman Cup

Team Switzerland defeats Germany behind the fantastic play of both Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic. It is Switzerland’s first win since 2001.

Team Switzerland is riding high after their 2018 Hopman Cup win.

Backed by the strong play of both Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic, they defeat Germany during this year’s Hopman Cup final. Coming down to the doubles match, the Swiss rose to the occasion and closed out the match in fine form. Federer and Bencic take the doubles meeting 4-3 (5-3) 4-2 to clinch the 2-1 win.

Federer took down Germany’s rising star Alexander Zverev in their singles meeting. Zverev has seen success against the Swiss great throughout the past year. Putting up a fight against Federer, the young German made it a three-set match after going up 1-0 at the end of the first. It would be Federer, however, who would emerge victorious. He takes their singles match 6-7(4) 6-0 6-2.

Team Switzerland was all smiles after their 2018 Hopman Cup win.

The win for the Swiss is their third ever at the ITF mixed gender event. They’ve won in 1992, 2001, and now 2018.

While former world No. 1 Angelique Kerber did take her singles match with Bencic, the Swiss player rebounded along with the backing of her partner in their doubles match. Kerber took her singles meeting against Bencic in straight sets, winning 6-4 6-1. The singles win for Kerber closes out a solid week of tennis for her individually. She is looking to rise yet again in the rankings and there is no doubt that she has found some momentum this week in Perth.

Team Switzerland can enjoy their Hopman Cup victory for the next year. As for Federer, Bencic, and all of the other participants in Perth, all eyes move toward the Australian Open. The first Grand Slam of the calendar year is coming up and everyone is looking to gain momentum heading into the major tournament.
