Stan Wawrinka is out of the 2018 Australian Open. The Swiss tennis star falls in what was just his second match back from knee surgery.

Stan Wawrinka is pleased with the current status of his return despite the loss at Melbourne Park. He falls in his second match at the Australian Open to American tennis player Tennys Sandgren.

The ninth seed decided to play in Melbourne right before the tournament kicked off. His second round loss was just his second match back after his recent knee surgery. Wawrinka will strategically continue his comeback to the ATP World Tour.

Sandgren takes his meeting with Wawrinka in straight sets. The American defeats the Swiss tennis star, winning 6-2 6-1 6-4.

Tennys Sandgren advances to the third round at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

Wawrinka remains optimistic in the aftermath of the loss. While he did not appear in top shape, his ability to compete this week is a positive sign for the returning star. He should be a player to beat just months down the line if he continues about his return cautiously.

"“I think the last 12 days was more than what I could have dreamed coming here. I really came without thinking I will be able to play the first match. That’s a big step for me.” – Stan Wawrinka in post-match interview"

Elsewhere at Melbourne Park, defending champion Roger Federer advances. He wins his round of 64 meeting in straight sets. Federer appears in fantastic form at the start of the 2018 ATP World Tour. Look for him and Rafael Nadal to remain the heavy favorites moving forward.

Federer’s fellow countryman, Stan Wawrinka, is in better shape than several other top players attempting returns from injury. Former world No. 1 Andy Murray decided to undergo surgery just prior to play at Melbourne Park. If Wawrinka stays his course, he should remain atop the ATP rankings. The only Grand Slam title he is yet to win is Wimbledon. Look for him to ramp up play in the middle months of 2018.
