Roger Federer: defending champion into fourth round

Roger Federer continues to amaze at the 2018 Australian Open. The Swiss great is the defending champion in men’s singles and enters the fourth round.

The defending champion is yet to drop a set so far at the major tournament. He defeats French tennis star, and this year’s No. 29 seed, Richard Gasquet in order to advance. Taking the match in straight sets, Federer defeats Gasquet 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.

Up next for the defending champion is Márton Fucsovics. The Hungarian tennis player is the current world No. 80 in men’s singles tennis. His fourth round appearance will be the furthest he has ever advanced at the Australian Open.
In the second round of action, Fucsovics pulled off the upset over American tennis star Sam Querrey. While the Hungarian is a heavy underdog against Federer, he has looked strong thus far at the major tournament.

While Federer ought to still be considered the favorite to defend his title, six-time champion Novak Djokovic also remains alive. The Serbian tennis star is into the fourth round at Melbourne Park. He comes into play this year as the 14th seed, something slightly unfamiliar to both himself and the field. Despite seeing limited play last year due to his elbow injury, Djokovic has the experience and talent necessary to make a title run.

Look for Roger Federer to remain a heavy favorite alongside both Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. The Spanish tennis star is also in action as he seeks a fourth round appearance. Action continues at the first Grand Slam of the calendar year. With several former champions still alive on the men’s singles side, the finals conclusion is poised to exceed expectations.
