Tennys Sandgren is in his first ever quarterfinal at a Grand Slam. But the question has to be asked, who is this relatively unknown American?

Tennys Sandgren is on top of the world right now. He enters his first ever quarterfinals match at any Grand Slam event. As the current world No. 97 in men’s singles tennis, Sandgren is making what must be considered a miracle run at the major tournament.

Coming from Gallatin, Tennessee, the 26-year-old American is the USA’s last chance for a title winner in men’s singles at Melbourne Park.

The Australian Open is sure to boost Sandgren’s career singles record. As he has played under 10 ATP singles matches before this tournament, the world No. 97 is making headlines in the most unexpected of ways.

He is no stranger to the sport though. While his success at Melbourne Park may come as a surprise, Sandgren has won titles on both the Challenger and Futures tours. It appears as though his hard work is finally paying off at the start of the 2018 ATP World Tour. Throughout his run at the Grand Slam so far, the American has defeated the likes of Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem among others. Wawrinka was the 9th seed and Thiem was the 5th seed at the Australian Open.

Despite the fact that Wawrinka was returning from injury this month, Sandgren won more than convincingly over the Swiss great. Taking the match in straight sets, the young American began to generate whispers at the major tournament. Now he faces another surprising contender for the title in Hyeon Chung. The South Korean tennis star is fresh off of an upset win over six-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic.
