Angelique Kerber: never in doubt at 2018 AusOpen
By Harry Floyd
Angelique Kerber is playing some of her best tennis right now. The former Australian Open champion is once again into the semifinals.
Angelique Kerber wastes no time advancing into the semifinals at the 2018 Australian Open. The 2016 champion cruises past young American star Madison Keys.
Winning in straight sets, Kerber takes the quarterfinals match 6-1, 6-2 on Wednesday.
Kerber is off to the best possible start on the 2018 WTA Tour. After having a strong showing at this year’s ITF Hopman Cup, she moved right into WTA action with a win at the Sydney International. Now, she is into the semifinals at Melbourne Park.
Coming in as the No. 21 seed at this year’s Grand Slam, Kerber found herself with an unusual path at the 2018 Australian Open. She was the world No. 1 in women’s singles tennis not so long ago. After winning the major tournament in 2016, she followed up with another Grand Slam title at the 2016 US Open. Then, 2017 produced different results for the German tennis star. She seems to have gotten her rhythm back in 2018 though.
As Angelique Kerber advances, the final four are starting to take form at Melbourne Park this week.
Already into the semifinals is world No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki. She will face Elise Mertens of Belgium while Kerber awaits her opponent. It could very well be the world No. 1 and top seed, Simona Halep. She is in action later today at the Australian Open. Halep is taking on another former world No. 1 in Karolina Pliskova. While Halep is the favorite in their quarterfinals meeting, Pliskova is without a doubt capable of pulling off the upset.
