Kyle Edmund is reaching new career heights at this year’s Australian Open. The British No. 2 makes his way into the semifinals.

Kyle Edmund is into the semifinals at the 2018 Australian Open.

The unsuspecting British No. 2 now faces sixth seeded Marin Cilic for a shot at the finals. Edmund comes in as an unseeded player and the current world No. 49 in men’s singles tennis. His quarterfinals win over third seeded Grigor Dimitrov proved to be maybe his best display of tennis so far at Melbourne Park.

Dispatching the world No. 3 in just four sets, Edmund moves one step closer to a title shot. The wild part about Edmund’s story is that he is still yet to notch a title on the ATP World Tour.

While he has seen some success and made headlines as the British No. 2 behind Andy Murray, the young tennis star remains in search of his first ATP singles title. In 2016, he reached as high as the world No. 40 ranking. That same year, he made his deepest run up until now at any Grand Slam event. Edmund appeared in the fourth round of play at the 2016 US Open. He is now a semifinalist at the Australian Open and looks to continue on.

Cilic and Edmund have faced each other just once on the ATP World Tour.

Last year, the Croatian tennis star took a straight set victory over Edmund in Shanghai. Their second set, however, went to tiebreak. It was Cilic who would emerge with the win, but anything can happen tomorrow at Melbourne Park.

There is no doubt that Cilic is riding high after his win over top seed and world No. 1 Rafael Nadal. The Spanish superstar withdrew due to injury during the fifth set. Cilic was, however, dominating the match from the start of the fourth set. He is cruising through his time so far at the Australian Open and is one of the best on the ATP World Tour. The Croatian is a former US Open champion and could work his way into conversations about the best in men’s singles tennis if he can find a way to take the title this year.

Kyle Edmund will need to continue his serendipitous run against Marin Cilic if he hopes to earn the elusive title shot. Either way though, the young British tennis star is exactly where he would like to be at the start of the 2018 ATP World Tour. Stay tuned to see how he fares in the coming days.
