Angelique Kerber CAN defeat Simona Halep at the Australian Open
By Harry Floyd
Angelique Kerber is set to face top seed and world No. 1 Simona Halep. Kerber, however, has scoreboard on the Romanian superstar.
Angelique Kerber finds herself in the Australian Open semifinals yet again.
The German tennis star is the 2016 champion in women’s singles at the Grand Slam event. After a rocky 2017 WTA Tour, she fell in the rankings and entered this year’s tournament as the No. 21 seed. Her semifinals opponent, Simona Halep, is the current world No. 1 and top seed at Melbourne Park this month.
Looking at their career head to head though, Kerber has scoreboard. The two tennis stars have gone back and forth in their battles. It is Kerber, however, with the 5-4 WTA singles record against the younger Romanian.
Simona Halep remains in search of her first Grand Slam title.
The experience factor could also play in Kerber’s favor. She is a two-time Grand Slam title holder and is off to a roaring start in 2018. While Halep’s 2018 WTA Tour is also going quite well, she cannot discount her opponent for even one second. The two last met at the WTA Championships in 2016. Kerber has won both of the previous two meetings between them and, with her 2018 momentum, makes their semifinals meeting a must-see match.
Do not pay attention to Angelique Kerber’s 21st seeding.
Her current WTA Tour ranking does not reflect her ability right now. A new approach heading into this year has brought Kerber a title win at the Sydney International and a fantastic run of tennis at the Australian Open so far. Halep will need to defy the odds and prove that she belongs amongst the best in women’s singles tennis on Thursday. The Romanian has been to a Grand Slam final just twice in her career and both times came at the French Open. She remains on the verge of a major tournament win, but needs to get past an experienced Kerber for a shot in Melbourne.
