Caroline Wozniacki has done it at Melbourne Park. The Danish tennis star is once again the world No. 1 and takes the title at the Australian Open.

Caroline Wozniacki is your 2018 women’s singles champion at the Australian Open.

It seems as though this title is a long time coming. The Danish tennis star has been the world No. 1 in the past and had previously reached two finals at the US Open. Now though, Wozniacki is cementing her legacy as one of the greatest in tennis. She is a Grand Slam champion.

Defeating top seeded Simona Halep in the finals, Wozniacki outlasts the Romanian, winning 7-6 (2) 3-6 6-4. While it is a difficult loss for Halep, Wozniacki hit the ground immediately with emotion in Melbourne.

Looking back at her time at Melbourne Park, the new world No. 1 was on the brink of an opening round loss her first day out. In the second round of play at the Australian Open, Jana Fett of Croatia had Wozniacki down to 1-5, 15-40 at one point. She was on the verge of knocking out the major tournament’s second seed. In classic Wozniacki fashion though, the Danish tennis star dug deep and proved why she belongs among the greatest in women’s singles tennis.

Caroline Wozniacki wins her maiden Grand Slam singles title.

Six matches and two weeks later, Wozniacki is into an elite club in women’s singles tennis. Many thought that we would see a new Grand Slam champion. Both she and Halep among others were searching for their career firsts. As for Halep, she will have to wait until later in the year to try again. Last year, she also reached the finals at the French Open. Don’t count her out for the 2018 WTA Tour. Halep ought to be considered a contender in any of the upcoming majors.
