Roger Federer: continues to amaze on the 2018 ATP World Tour

Roger Federer is now a 20-time Grand Slam champion in men’s singles tennis. Age continues to be just a number for the Swiss superstar.

As Roger Federer notches yet another Australian Open title, any speculation as to whether or not he is slowing down can cease. The 36-year-old tennis veteran continues to prove himself on the ATP World Tour, winning a now record 20 Grand Slam titles.

After the year that Federer had in 2017, one could understand if he would begin to consider life after tennis. His performance this month at Melbourne Park, however, says that he is not quite ready to talk retirement. Defeating Croatian tennis star Marin Cilic in the finals, Federer defies the odds and cements his legacy as one of the greatest athletes in the history of sports.

Winning in five sets, Federer faced his most difficult challenge at Melbourne Park during his finals meeting with Cilic. All applause to Cilic as well. The Croatian came into play as the world No. 6 and made Federer work hard for his sixth Australian Open title. Cilic is not going anywhere this year either. Look for him to make a play for an ATP top three ranking in the coming months.

Roger Federer remains THE player to beat on tour.

As several top players in men’s singles suffer due to injury, Federer simply does what he does best. Tennis is approaching the point to where it cannot be discussed without mentioned either him or Serena Williams. The Swiss superstar appears at home on the court and the numbers back it up. Federer loves the sport as much as it loves him. Understandably emotional after his post-match speech, the tears struck the Australian Open champion. Always a fan favorite, it is hard to ever pick against the tennis great.

The 20th Grand Slam title could be a wakeup call for other top players in the sport. Rafael Nadal is hoping to bounce back quick from his grade one leg injury. Andy Murray is crossing his fingers for a speedy recovery following his recent hip injury. And, everyone is awaiting work on Novak Djokovic’s elbow injury that appeared to flare up late in his run at Melbourne Park. In the meantime, Roger Federer will be the frontrunner until he is truly challenged. History will continue to be made and the upcoming majors ought to come down to either him or the field. Several young stars such as Grigor Dimitrov or Alexander Zverev can also take advantage of the recent veteran injuries. They, like Federer, will look to set themselves apart from the rest.
