Petra Kvitova opens her time in St. Petersburg in outstanding fashion. She defeats Russian Elena Vesnina in straight sets.
Petra Kvitova wins an impressive opener at the 2018 St. Petersburg Open. The former two-time Wimbledon champion is in need of a strong performance this week.
Defeating Russian tennis veteran Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-0, Kvitova kicks off her time exactly how she would like to in St. Petersburg. Up next for the Czech tennis star is Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu. The two square off for their round of 16 meeting tomorrow at the WTA Tour event.
Kvitova splashed out during her Australian opener earlier this month at the Grand Slam in Melbourne. The former Wimbledon champion is continuing her comeback to tennis after surviving a home invasion attack just prior to the 2017 WTA Tour. A fan favorite in women’s singles tennis, everyone is hoping for a big 2018 from the Czech tennis star.
With 20 career WTA titles to her name, Petra Kvitova remains one of the best players in women’s singles tennis.
The biggest surprise so far at the 2018 St. Petersburg Open is third seed Caroline Garcia seeing an upset. Still to play is top seeded Caroline Wozniacki. She squares off against Anastasia Potapova tomorrow at the WTA Tour event. Wozniacki is coming off the biggest win of her career. Taking the Australian Open title, the Danish tennis star defeated Romanian superstar Simona Halep in the finals. She looks to followup the Grand Slam win with a strong performance in St. Petersburg.
