Stan Wawrinka was the top seed at this week’s Sofia Open. The Swiss tennis star sees an upset in his semifinals match with Mirza Bašić.

Sofia Open action is into the finals this weekend. The ATP World Tour 250 series event moves on without its top seed in Stan Wawrinka though.

Wawrinka sees a somewhat unexpected upset in his match against Mirza Bašić. The younger Bosnian tennis player wins their meeting in straight sets, going 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. Bašić is the current world No. 129 in men’s singles tennis.

While it is disappointing for Wawrinka to not reach the finals, the Swiss great is still easing into his return on the 2018 ATP World Tour. Like several other top players in men’s singles tennis, Wawrinka has been dealing with ongoing injuries over the past year. He is taking his return to the courts one tournament at a time.

Last month at the Australian Open, Wawrinka saw an exit from Melbourne Park in his second match. This time around, he fared slightly better at the Sofia Open. His progress is without a doubt a positive. His time in Sofia saw wins over both Martin Kližan and Viktor Troicki.

Stan Wawrinka is in action at Rotterdam on Monday.

One step at a time for the Swiss great. That’s the motto moving forward. He is the current world No. 15 in men’s singles tennis and will likely take some time to crack back into the ATP Top 10. He can always, however, surprise the field and take a title at any given tournament. Look for Wawrinka to have an impact on tour in the coming months as he shakes off the cobwebs.

As for the finals at the 2018 Sofia Open, Bašić squares off against Romania’s Marius Copil tomorrow. The two meet as unseeded finalists at the ATP World Tour 250 series event. Copil is the current world No. 93 in men’s singles tennis. No matter who wins, it will be a career first ATP singles title for one of the contenders. This weekend sets one lucky tennis player up for a highlight of his life. Stay tuned to see how the finals action unfolds at the 2018 Sofia Open and check back for updates on Stan Wawrinka in Rotterdam next week.
