Simona Halep is back into the world No. 1 ranking on the WTA Tour

Simona Halep is right back into the top position in women’s singles tennis. Her strong week in Doha make her the world No. 1 again.
Simona Halep surpasses Caroline Wozniacki for the world No. 1 ranking. Reaching the semifinals at the Qatar Ladies Open, the Romanian tennis star earns enough points to jump past the Australian Open champion for the top spot.
Despite pulling out of her semifinals match at the Qatar Open, Halep’s run at the WTA Tour event was enough to give her the world No. 1 ranking again. She took down tennis star Garbine Muguruza in the quarterfinals before ultimately pulling out due to an injury in the semifinals. Interestingly enough, Wozniacki also reached the semis in Doha.
While Wozniacki is faring well on tour since her Australian Open title, Halep has slightly outdone her in terms of points. Now, Halep has a 400+ point lead over Wozniacki in the women’s singles rankings. The only other change within the WTA Top 10 is at the No. 9 and 10 spots. Angelique Kerber drops to No. 10 while Petra Kvitova moves into the No. 9 ranking. Kvitova is having a stellar month right now, notching back to back WTA singles titles. Kerber, however, ought to push toward the top in the near future too.
The 2018 WTA Tour is sure to see several players take the top spot.
Halep is coming off of a big 2017 season. Her strong start to the year is a continuation of her newfound momentum on tour. Finishing runner-up to Wozniacki at Melbourne Park this year, the Romanian remains in search of her first ever Grand Slam title. She must be considered a top contender at the 2018 French Open. Previously, Halep has reached the finals twice at Roland Garros. She is without a doubt one of the players to beat at the major tournament.
