WTA Tour: February Race to Singapore Rankings Update
By Harry Floyd
WTA Tour action is off to a wild start so far in 2018. As Simona Halep overtakes Caroline Wozniacki for the world No. 1 ranking, here’s a look at what’s happening with the Race to Singapore.
Despite Simona Halep rising to the No. 1 ranking on the WTA Tour, she still remains behind Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki in the Race to Singapore. Wozniacki is roughly 700 points ahead of Halep in the Porsche Race to SIngapore rankings.
Right behind the top two is former world No. 1 Angelique Kerber. The German tennis star is off to a red hot start in 2018. Appearing more like her 2016 self, Kerber is making moves in the singles rankings and her bid for Singapore.
The Race to Singapore is seeing a fantastic mix of veteran talent and young stars going at it right now. Wozniacki and Halep are the players to beat but others are making big jumps in recent weeks. Players such as Elina Svitolina must be considered heavy favorites to continue upward trends in the coming months.

Elina Svitolina jumps two positions in the Race to Singapore. She moves into the No. 4 spot.
Right behind Svitolina is recent back to back title winner Petra Kvitova. Surprisingly, Svitolina’s title win in Dubai was enough to surpass Kvitova despite the Czech’s two title wins earlier in the month. Svitolina, a rising star in the sport, has seen deep runs throughout almost all of her early 2018 WTA Tour events. After winning a title in Brisbane, she would reach the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, and defend her title at the Dubai Tennis Championships. Svitolina is also the world No. 4 in the women’s singles rankings to go right along with her fourth place position currently in the Race to Singapore. She is without a doubt one of the dominant players on the WTA Tour and must be considered a contender in the upcoming major tournaments.

In the eighth place position right now sits Karolina Pliskova. Having reached the world No. 1 ranking last year on tour, Pliskova has made herself one of the top players in the sport. She jumps one position in the Race to Singapore rankings, moving into the top eight. Look for several players to swap positions in the coming weeks and months. 2018 WTA Tour action is gearing up to be a fantastic year for women’s singles tennis.
