Monica Puig stuns the second seed and Australian Open champion at the Miami Open. She takes down Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

Monica Puig is moving on at the 2018 Miami Open. Not advancing, is her round of 64 opponent Caroline Wozniacki. Hopes were high for the Australian Open champion in Miami. Coming in as the second seed, she is behind just Simona Halep in the rankings.

After winning her opener over Samantha Stosur, Puig carried her momentum right into play with Wozniacki. Despite dropping the first set to Wozniacki 0-6, Puig roared back and took both of the final two sets, going 6-4, 6-4.

The Puerto Rican tennis star takes on Maria Sakkari in the round of 32 tomorrow at the Miami Open. While the outcome is disappointing for Wozniacki, it isn’t anything to worry about. She has had a fantastic last few months on the WTA Tour. A few losses here and there don’t require her to panic just yet, especially when they come at the hands of solid players such as Puig.

Monica Puig is an Olympic Gold Medalist. She is the current world No. 82 on the WTA Tour and someone to watch at the Miami Open.

The win over Wozniacki is huge for Puig moving forward. She has seen some success in women’s singles before, but is still looking for that breakout year on tour. Her Olympic gold medal outing in Rio brought her into the spotlight. At just 24-years-old, Puig still has plenty of time to make headlines in women’s singles tennis. She is always someone to keep an eye on in any tournament she plays. Puig has proven her ability to hang with the best in the sport and is on the verge of greatness at any given moment. If she can continue on at the Miami Open, look for her to have an interesting chance at a finals run. She will, however, need to get past a very competitive field.
