Istanbul Cup: Top Seed Caroline Wozniacki Wins Opener

Caroline Wozniacki is off to a strong start at the 2018 Istanbul Cup. She is a former champion at the event, winning in 2014.
Top seed and world No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki gets the start she was looking for at the 2018 Istanbul Cup. She is coming off of a tough upset at the Miami Open. In Miami, Monica Puig completed the surprise win over her, winning a hard fought three-set thriller.
Now, Wozniacki is back on top. She defeats Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia in Istanbul.
Taking their meeting in straight sets, Wozniacki wins the match over Alexandrova 6-2, 6-2. The Istanbul Cup features several former champions, one of whom is Wozniacki. The Danish tennis star remains the player to beat moving forward. The 2018 WTA Tour is heading into the middle months and Wozniacki will need to gain some much needed ground if she hopes to retake the top ranking in women’s singles tennis.
World No. 1 Simona Halep is in action at Stuttgart this week.

The fight for No. 1 will continue throughout the entire 2018 WTA Tour. Several players are within striking distance of Wozniacki at No. 2 and Halep needs to be on top of her game if she plans to add some distance between herself and the others. Action at Roland Garros being right around the corner ought to fuel the sport’s best. A strong run at the Istanbul Cup could do wonders for Wozniacki moving forward.
