Dominic Thiem Ousted During Barcelona Quarterfinals
By Harry Floyd
Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem is knocked out of the Barcelona Open quarterfinals. He will need to bounce back in the coming weeks.
The run comes to an end at the Barcelona Open for Dominic Thiem. As the current world No. 7 in men’s singles tennis, Thiem is among the top players in the sport right now. He falls to young up and coming Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece on Friday at the ATP World Tour event. Thiem was the tournament’s third seed behind both Rafael Nadal and Grigor Dimitrov.
Also losing is Dimitrov who falls to fifth seeded Pablo Carreno Busta. Nadal moves on for a chance to reach the finals and defend his title. Up next for the world No. 1 is David Goffin in the semifinals at the 2018 Barcelona Open.
With the semifinals all set this weekend in men’s singles, Thiem needs to look ahead and gather himself moving forward. Action at the French Open is right around the corner and the young Austrian has a chance to make a run at the upcoming Grand Slam event. Last year, he reached the semifinals at the major tournament, making it back-to-back years in the final four at Roland Garros. His success during the clay court season in his young career makes him someone to watch at the Grand Slam. While Nadal is the heavy favorite, others such as Thiem could pose a threat.
