Gael Monfils is in action this week at the 2018 Bavarian International. The French tennis great is the tournament’s seventh seed.
German tennis star Alexander Zverev may be the top seed in Munich, but Gael Monfils could make a run this week at the Bavarian International. The French tennis veteran has the skills and experience necessary to make a run at the ATP World Tour event.
Monfils is the tournament’s seventh seed, facing Mirza Bašić first on Tuesday.
At the front of the talented field in men’s singles is Zverev. Along with the young world No. 3 are several former champions and local favorites. The event in Munich features the older Zverev in Mischa along with former champion Philipp Kohlschreiber among others. Monfils is the current world No. 40 on the ATP World Tour and is in need of a strong run. He is a fan favorite and has the resume to back up his athletic abilities on the court. If he can put on a fine display of tennis in Munich, he could be an outside contender for the upcoming French Open. Monfils, who has never won a Grand Slam singles title, finished runner-up in 2008 at the major tournament. The fans in Paris would love to see him do well at the event next month.
First things first, Gael Monfils is in action in Munich.
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Gael Monfils is a solid 13-6 in ATP singles matches so far in 2018. His strong seeding in Munich gives him a chance in his early round play. Other players to lookout for this week include Hyeon Chung and Fabio Fognini among others. Several veteran journeymen and young stars round out a diverse field of players in Munich. Zverev is the defending champion at the ATP World Tour event, but he must prove that he deserves to hold the world No. 3 ranking. Right now, he is behind just Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the rankings. Marin Cilic is in the fourth position with Grigor Dimitrov rounding out the ATP Top five.
