Caroline Wozniacki advances to the round of 16 at the 2018 Madrid Open. She wins a three-set thriller in order to move on.

Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki is moving on at the 2018 Madrid Open. She is the current world No. 2 in women’s singles tennis and entered the week as the second seed at the event. World No. 1 Simona Halep is the tournament’s top seed and defending champion. In fact, Halep is defending back-to-back titles at the WTA Tour Premier Mandatory event. The world No. 1 is into the round of 32 in Madrid and squares off against Elise Mertens next.

Wozniacki survives her meeting with Ashleigh Barty, winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

The Madrid Open second seed is having a fantastic 2018 WTA Tour so far. After winning her first career Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open, Wozniacki has gone back and forth in the Race to Singapore for the top spot with Halep. The two squared off at Melbourne Park and Halep has recently taken back the top ranking in women’s singles tennis. They are neck and neck in the Race to Singapore and a strong stretch of tennis could also move Wozniacki back toward the world No. 1 ranking. The Danish tennis great will need to continue on at the Madrid Open if she hopes to gain ground though. Halep, the two-time defending champion, is the favorite in Madrid.

Caroline Wozniacki is the world No. 2 and currently sits in the top position in the Race to Singapore. Simona Halep, however, is the top seed at the Madrid Open.
