Kyle Edmund UPSETS Novak Djokovic at Madrid Open
By Harry Floyd
Novak Djokovic, a former champion at the Madrid Open, finds himself out of the mix after Kyle Edmund completes the upset.
Some may call Kyle Edmund’s win over Novak Djokovic this week an upset. It can easily be considered one, but given Nole’s recent return from injury, the match could have gone either way. Djokovic has struggled with an ongoing right elbow injury for the better part of a year now. After Wimbledon 2017, the Serbian stepped away from the courts in order to rest, recover, and rehab the injury. He bounced back at the Australian Open this year and has continued to play ATP World Tour events. As the current world No. 12 in men’s singles tennis, Nole entered the Madrid Open as the tournament’s 10th seed. Edmund is the current world No. 22 in men’s singles.
Edmund wins a three-set thriller over the former two-time Madrid Open champion.
Winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, Edmund moves on and will face another tough match against David Goffin next. Goffin is the tournament’s eighth seed in men’s singles. Djokovic’s loss comes after a strong showing against Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori. The Japanese great has also dealt with an injury over the last year. He falls to Nole in a tough straight set meeting.

Kyle Edmund faces David Goffin in the round of 16.
The 23-year-old Edmund is poised to break into the ATP Top 20 after his performance in Madrid so far. If he can continue on at the event, he will jump leaps and bounds in the singles rankings. His current world No. 22 ranking is the highest he has ever reached on the ATP World Tour. Somehow, Edmund is yet to win an ATP singles title. He has seen enough success on the tour though to be considered a contender this time of year. Elsewhere in Madrid, the tournament’s top seed and five-time champion, Rafael Nadal, wins his opener. He remains the favorite moving forward in Madrid and in the coming weeks at the French Open. Rafa defeats Gael Monfils this week. Stay tuned to see if Kyle Edmund or other young up and comers can contend with the likes of the King of Clay at the 2018 Madrid Open.
