Madrid Open: Alexander Zverev shocks field with another Masters 1000 title

Alexander Zverev wins the 2018 Madrid Open by defeating Dominic Thiem in the finals. It is his third career Masters 1000 title.

Two of the sport’s biggest rising stars clashed during the finals at the 2018 Madrid Open. It is the younger of the two who emerges on top though. Alexander Zverev defeats Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem in straight sets, earning his third career Masters 1000 title.

Zverev wins the finals match 6-4 6-4 over Thiem.

The win at the Madrid Open comes just after Zverev defended his title in Munich. His play is red hot as of late and he must be considered one of the top contenders in men’s singles tennis right now. With action heading into the French Open, Zverev is proving himself on clay. Rafael Nadal was the five-time and defending champion in Madrid. It was Thiem though who would knock out the King of Clay. Thiem’s run didn’t stop there. He would take down Kevin Anderson in the semifinals in order to reach a finals meeting with Zverev.

Alexander Zverev wins the 2018 Madrid Open, completing back-to-back titles so far in the month of May.

While Nadal might remain the favorite heading into Roland Garros, both Zverev and Thiem are without a doubt players to watch. A third Masters 1000 title gives Sascha even more experience under his belt. His first career Grand Slam title win could be coming sooner rather than later. He is standing out amongst a strong younger generation of players in men’s singles tennis. This coming week, Zverev enters the Italian Open as the second seed. He and Thiem could carry this momentum into play there. Thiem’s runner-up finish at the Madrid Open included a huge win over Nadal in the quarterfinals which was actually his third win over the Spanish superstar.
