(VIDEO) Marcos Baghdatis retires hurt in 1st round of French Open
Marcos Baghdatis, ranked 84 in the world, retired hurt in his first round match in the French Open against his opponent Santiago Giraldo, ranked 312 in the world. Giraldo, a former top 30 player, tried to console a weeping Baghdatis, who seems to have either a knee or thigh injury in his left leg.
Baghdatis was leading the scoreboard at 6-3, 4-2 when he bent forward and was seen unable to
walk properly. Looking at his box, the Cypriot former World number 8 walked to his chair, clutching his leg and smashing a racquet before eventually covering his face with a towel.
Baghdatis has had injury issues throughout his career. In last year’s Chengdu Open Final, Baghdatis collapsed on the court at 3-2, eventually retiring and giving the title to Denis Istomin. His ranking dropped out of the top 100 when he returned for the Australian Open this year, where he lost to Andrey Rublev in the second round.
This isn’t the only injury he’s faced this season. Earlier in the Indian Wells Masters in March, Baghdatis battled through the qualifiers to reach the fourth round and set up a clash with Canadian Milos Raonic, only to eventually retire before the commencement of the match.
It is unsure what exactly the injury is, and the details will be released when Baghdatis’ post-match press conference is available.
We wish a speedy recovery to the Cypriot superstar.
