Simona Halep reaches RG18 finals, another chance at glory
By Harry Floyd
Simona Halep reaches another Grand Slam final as she takes on American Sloane Stephens for a shot at the 2018 French Open title.
World number one Simona Halep is vying for another Grand Slam singles title. The Romanian tennis star has come so close to glory before. Most recently, she fell to Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki at Melbourne Park earlier this year. Wozniacki took home her first ever Australian Open title, making it the first major tournament win for her resume. That came right after she also won the 2017 WTA Finals. For the better part of a year, Wozniacki and Halep have been going back and forth for the sport’s top ranking. Now, a French Open title is within reach for Halep.
Last year, she finished runner-up to Jelena Ostapenko. After the defending champion splashed out early at Roland Garros, Halep remained the player to beat. She has stayed that way throughout the tournament. Halep faces American Sloane Stephens in the finals.

Stephens is not your typical underdog heading into the finals meeting. The young American burst onto the scene in women’s singles tennis by winning the 2017 US Open. Shocking the sport, she took down fellow countrywoman Madison Keys to earn her first career Grand Slam title. Ironically, it is once again Keys who she ousts on her way to the Roland Garros final. Stephens defeats Keys to reach a meeting with Halep. She takes her semifinals match in straight sets, winning 6-4 6-4.
Simona Halep appears destined to win a Grand Slam title. In her way, however, is another young star in women’s singles tennis who also has experience at her back. Sloane Stephens is the 2017 US Open champion and looks to add a second Grand Slam to her resume. The 2018 French Open is shaping up to represent the best of the best on the WTA Tour.
