Stan Wawrinka, Other Veterans Win Early At Wimbledon

Stan Wawrinka is among the early winners at the 2018 Wimbledon Championships. He earns an impressive opening round victory.
Stan Wawrinka wins a hard fought opener at the 2018 Wimbledon Championships. Taking on a rising star in Grigor Dimitrov, Wawrinka entered the Grand Slam as an underdog during his first match. Dimitrov is the current ATP Finals champion and was the major tournament’s sixth seed. It is Wawrinka who advances at Wimbledon this week.
Winning in four sets, Wawrinka goes 1-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 on Center Court.

Several veteran greats are making returns to the ATP World Tour in recent months. Wawrinka is one of them. He, Novak Djokovic, Milos Raonic, Kei Nishikori, and even Rafael Nadal to a certain extent, have been sidelined for prolonged periods of time due to injury.
Andy Murray is also among those veteran stars who is experiencing injury during this era of his career. Murray, however, has not been as fortunate as the others in recent months. Wawrinka, continuing to find his rhythm on tour, enters Wimbledon and jumps off to a hot start.

Of course, the number one veteran to earn an early round win is Roger Federer. The Swiss superstar seeks his ninth career title at the Wimbledon Championships this year. He wins his opener in straight sets in order to advance. Nadal is in action on Tuesday at the major tournament. Gael Monfils earns a hard fought victory over fellow countryman Richard Gasquet. American John Isner is also an early veteran tennis winner o the men’s singles side. Stay tuned to see how the opening round action unfolds in London the week. Stan Wawrinka will need to keep up his newfound momentum if he hopes to win his first title at the Grand Slam. It is the only major the Swiss star is yet to win.
