Milos Raonic: Return of Former Wimbledon Finalist Complete?
By Harry Floyd
Milos Raonic is one of the handfuls of top players on the ATP World Tour who has battled with ongoing injuries over the years.
Milos Raonic is a former Wimbledon finalist, having reached the championship match during the 2016 Grand Slam. While he would fall to men’s singles champion Andy Murray, the major run was a sign that Raonic had rebounded from injuries that past year. He had entered a new era in his career and was emerging as one of the best players in the sport yet again. Then, Raonic found himself battling injuries during the 2017 ATP World Tour and sliding in the rankings.
His performance so far at Wimbledon cannot be discounted. The 13th seed is off to a start that fans had become used to seeing from him. Two wins into the Grand Slam, Raonic is proving that he might be getting back to his top form.
Raonic defeats Liam Broady first at the 2018 Wimbledon Championships. Winning in straight sets, the opening round match was a huge positive for the Canadian tennis star. At just 27-years-old, there is no reason to think that Raonic cannot rebound entirely on the ATP World Tour. Injuries can get in the way of anyone’s career, but it’s been unfortunate to see them impact his touring so significantly. The tennis star has not won an ATP singles title since 2016. Currently, he is the world number 32 in men’s singles but could ascend back into the top ten in the near future.
Milos Raonic reached the finals at Wimbledon in 2016. The Canadian tennis star remains in search of his first career Grand Slam singles title. Even if he does not win or advance further at Wimbledon, his performance so far is a strong positive takeaway.
In his second match this month at Wimbledon, Milos Raonic defeats John Millman in order to advance. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal continue to be the favorites moving forward, but a player like Raonic can make a run. If he is healthy enough to keep it up, the Canadian tennis star will play spoiler deep into the major tournament. Several top players such as Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, and Kei Nishikori have all suffered injuries in recent years. Raonic is not alone in having ongoing issues impact his ATP World Tour play. The Canadian might, however, be starting to rediscover his rhythm in men’s singles tennis.
