WTA Singles Rankings Update: Angelique Kerber Jumps Six Places

WTA Singles Rankings: here’s a look at some major moves in the singles rankings following the 2018 Wimbledon Championships.

WTA Singles Rankings – following action at the 2018 Wimbledon Championships, several players are making big moves in the rankings. Women’s singles champion Angelique Kerber is the most notable mover this week. Jumping six places in the singles rankings, the German tennis star moves into the world number four position. She is a former world number one, having reached career heights on the 2016 WTA Tour. That year, she earned two Grand Slam singles titles. Her win at Wimbledon this year marks her third career major tournament title.

Kerber defeats American tennis legend Serena Williams in straight sets to take the women’s singles title this year in London.

The successful run at Wimbledon also catapults Kerber into second place in the WTA Race to Singapore. She reached the finals at the year-end tournament in 2016. She is behind just Romanian tennis star Simona Halep in the Race to Singapore. Halep hangs onto the world number one ranking in women’s singles this week. Caroline Wozniacki remains in the world number two position and American Sloane Stephens jumps one place into the third position.

Stephens’ move comes despite her early exit from the major tournament. Defending champion Garbine Muguruza suffered a slide in the rankings this week, allowing others to leap past her. Muguruza falls four places into the world number seven place.

Angelique Kerber moves up six places in the WTA singles rankings this week. She also jumps leaps and bounds in the Race to Singapore thanks to her Wimbledon women’s singles title.

Julia Goerges also makes a move up three places in the WTA singles rankings. She is into the world number ten ranking and could continue higher if she can keep it up. The German tennis player reached the semifinals at Wimbledon, falling to eventual runner-up Williams. Look for action on the WTA Tour to get even more competitive in the coming weeks. Everyone is jockeying for position in the WTA singles rankings and on the Race to Singapore.
